Best time to trade gold (XAUUSD) in South Africa

Updated 2026-10-12

Gold trades almost 24 hours a day on MT5, but most of its daily range comes in a few windows. This page lists them in South African time for today's US and UK clock settings, and explains why gold moves when it does.

Why gold moves in the South African afternoon

The biggest drivers of gold are US interest-rate expectations and the dollar. Those are repriced by US data (CPI, Non-Farm Payrolls, retail sales) at 08:30 New York time, which is 14:30 SAST for most of the year and 15:30 SAST in the US winter, and by Fed decisions at 20:00 or 21:00 SAST. That is why the New York session usually produces gold's largest swings.

The London open and the London fix

London is the centre of the physical gold market. Volume rises from the London open (09:00 SAST in the UK summer, 10:00 in winter), and the LBMA gold price auctions at 10:30 and 15:00 London time are reference points for the market.

The quiet hours

Between the New York close and the Tokyo open, and especially around the daily break (17:00–18:00 New York time, 23:00–00:00 SAST in US summer time), gold liquidity is thin and spreads widen. Many South African traders avoid this window because a structure stop is more likely to be hit by a spread spike than by a real move.

Read the structure before the busy hours

A common routine is to check the weekly, daily and 4-hour structure before London opens, mark the demand and supply zones and the liquidity above and below price, then watch how price reacts when the busy hours arrive. The live gold page shows the current bias on every timeframe, refreshed every 15 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What time does gold open in South Africa?

On MT5, gold (XAUUSD) reopens after the weekend on Sunday evening New York time, about 00:00 SAST on Monday in US summer time and 01:00 SAST in winter, depending on your broker's server. It then trades almost 24 hours with a short daily break around 23:00–00:00 SAST.

Is gold more active in the morning or afternoon in South Africa?

Usually the afternoon: from the London–New York overlap and especially after US data at 14:30 SAST (15:30 in the US winter). The London open in the morning is the second busiest window.

What news moves gold the most?

US CPI, Non-Farm Payrolls, FOMC rate decisions and Fed speeches, because they move real yields and the dollar. Geopolitical shocks can move gold at any hour.

Why does my gold stop get hit at night?

Spreads widen around the daily break (about 23:00–00:00 SAST in US summer time). A tight stop can be touched by the wider spread even if the price chart barely moves.
