Market structure: BOS vs CHoCH
Updated 2026-10-12
Market structure is the pattern of swing highs and swing lows on a chart. A break of structure (BOS) says the current trend continued; a change of character (CHoCH) is the first sign it may be turning. Knowing which one you are looking at stops you reading every wiggle as a reversal.

Swing highs and lows: HH, HL, LH, LL
A bullish structure makes higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL). A bearish structure makes lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL). When highs and lows overlap without a clear pattern, the market is ranging.
Break of structure (BOS)
A BOS is a break in the direction of the trend: in a bullish structure, price closes above the last swing high; in a bearish structure, below the last swing low. It confirms the trend is still in charge.
Change of character (CHoCH)
A CHoCH is the first break against the trend: in a bullish structure, price closes below the last higher low. It is an early warning that the structure has flipped on that timeframe. It is not a guarantee of a reversal; many CHoCHs on the 1-hour are only pullbacks inside a bigger daily trend.
Closes, not wicks
A wick through a swing level that closes back inside is usually a liquidity grab (stops being taken), not a break. Market Lens only counts a BOS or CHoCH on a candle close, on closed candles only, so its labels do not repaint.
Top-down: which timeframe wins?
A CHoCH on the 1-hour against a bullish daily and weekly structure is a counter-trend move until the higher timeframes agree. Reading W1 → D1 → H4 → H1 in order tells you whether a break is a new trend or noise. Every market page shows the current structure on all four.
How to tell a BOS from a CHoCH
- Label the last swings. Mark the most recent swing highs and lows and label them HH, HL, LH or LL.
- Decide the current structure. HH + HL = bullish, LH + LL = bearish, overlapping = ranging.
- Wait for a candle close beyond a swing. A close above/below a swing level is a break; a wick that closes back inside is not.
- Classify the break. With the trend = BOS (continuation). Against the trend = CHoCH (possible flip).
- Check the higher timeframe. A CHoCH that agrees with the higher-timeframe structure is more meaningful than one that fights it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH?
A BOS breaks structure in the direction of the trend (continuation). A CHoCH is the first break against the trend (a possible change of direction).
Does a CHoCH mean the trend has reversed?
Not on its own. It means structure flipped on that timeframe; higher timeframes may still point the other way.
Should I use wicks or closes for BOS?
Most structure traders use candle closes, because wicks through a level often reverse (liquidity grabs).
What timeframe should I use for market structure?
Read top-down: weekly and daily for direction, 4-hour and 1-hour for the current swing. Market Lens shows all four together.
